This is a time of year when people reflect on the year that’s past and pick highlights. But when I started that process, I kept coming across some small sketches I just love. I like them so much, it feels like someone else made them. I wish they were more “finished” but also am so afraid of ink, I don’t even want to try. Anyway, I think they give a pretty good idea of who I am and what I’m about as an artist, kind of foundation for whatever it is that I’m doing here on Substack.
This little sketch started a whole new period in my life. It’s been quite an adventure.
The Christmas Fairy predates the jazz band but not by much. Uncle Sam followed around, that time, you know the date. I love these little characters representative of a larger concept.
Caricature is art unto itself. I dabble. If you get the idea, that’s good enough for moi.
I’m often shocked by the many, many contradictions we live with daily. Like wage equity. You have to wonder sometimes, what did we think was going to happen; that two working adults in a household would double our purchasing power? Remember DINKs?
I think this is one of my funniest, or funnest, cartoons. It’s so ridiculous, it still makes me laugh out loud. I’m pretty sure it was inspired by my younger sister who is a very talented fabric artist. (on Insta @theresa.quilts)
I made this drawing a couple of years ago to poke fun at my very good friend, Jack Butler, who passed away a few weeks ago at the age of 86. He was an artist and the kind of really good artist who should have kept an assistant, or two. I’m going to miss him.
So, I hope you’ve got some time to think about where you’ve been over the past year (or few years), and where you might be going in the coming year.
What’s that saying about living in interesting times?
All the best to you and yours,
-Robert

Thanks Chris. My fav too. Happy New Year!
I love your style. It’s a sensitive line. The pencil allows that; ink almost always hardens the line. My favorite is definitely Pocket of Resistance! Happy New Year!
